Suicide is a serious public health problem. This can have a long-lasting impact on individuals, families, and communities. Preventing suicide requires strategies that involve different levels of society. Firstly, we need to be able to identify persons who have suicidal ideation and who may have attempted suicide before. We can help to prevent suicide by learning the trigger and warning signs, promoting prevention and resilience, and committing to social change.

Many factors can increase the risk of suicide. These factors can be emotional to environmental causes. For example, people who have experienced violence, bullying, abuse, or sexual violence have a higher risk of suicide. With the right support from family and the community and also having access to healthcare can decrease suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Most times people are suicidal because they feel they are alone and hopeless.

It is sad suicide is also at an alarming rate among our medical professionals. Medical professionals are taught to have a reputation as stoic, determined, and driven. These teachings have been ongoing for decades where they ignore their bodies telling them to rest or even to eat. The mental constraint this has on someone is very high. As medical professionals, we are taught that our patients come first. And rightfully so, patients do come first. But, if we are not well then we cannot properly care for our patients. This type of mental constraint is seen especially in the surgical department and throughout all medical professionals. Most of us function at high levels in our profession with depression, etc.

Let us work together to treat our patients effectively while taking care of our own health.
